Introduction
When was the last time you ran a proper audit of your marketing setup? Not just glanced at your Instagram insights or checked your email open rates, but really examined how your strategy, tools, content, and customer journey are performing together?
If you’re running a small business or managing your marketing solo, it’s easy to focus on the day-to-day. But sometimes the answers to “why am I not seeing results?” are hiding in plain sight.
In this post, I’ll walk you through five practical marketing audit checks that I use when reviewing client accounts. These aren’t complicated. They’re the things that get missed, overlooked, or set up in a rush – but when fixed, they often lead to immediate improvements in performance.
1. Your Lead Capture Forms Are Underperforming
What to check:
- Are your lead magnets clear and compelling?
- Is your form too long or too vague?
- Are you offering something your audience actually wants?
Quick win: Look at your most visited pages. If you don’t have a lead capture form on those pages, you’re missing easy opportunities. Add a simple, specific opt-in form with one clear benefit, and test it for a week.
2. Your Email List Isn’t Properly Segmented
What to check:
- Are you sending the same message to everyone?
- Have you set up tags, groups, or segments based on actions, purchases, or interests?
Quick win: If you’re using a tool like Klaviyo or MailerLite, segment your list by engagement. Start by sending a re-engagement campaign to inactive users, and tailor your main emails to your most active readers.
3. Your Website Isn’t Telling Visitors What To Do
What to check:
- Do your pages have a clear, visible call-to-action?
- Are your services/products obvious within the first 5 seconds of landing on your homepage?
Quick win: Run a 5-second test. Ask a friend or family member to visit your site for just 5 seconds, then ask them what you do and what they should do next. If they can’t answer clearly, it’s time to update your hero section and main CTAs.
4. Your Analytics Are Tracking… Nothing
What to check:
- Is Google Analytics properly set up and connected?
- Are events or goals tracking form submissions, purchases, or important clicks?
Quick win: Set up basic conversion tracking in GA4 or through Google Tag Manager. Track button clicks on contact forms, checkout pages, and email signups. Without data, you’re marketing in the dark.
5. Your Content Doesn’t Align With Search Intent
What to check:
- Are you writing blog posts or social content that your audience is actually searching for?
- Have you done keyword research recently?
Quick win: Use a tool like Ubersuggest or the free version of SEMrush to check search volume and intent. Update one blog post to match a keyword with high volume and low difficulty. Refresh the meta description, internal links, and subheadings while you’re there.
